PREPARE THE SURFACE WELL
When it comes to applying masking tape, a clean surface will ensure the best adhesion. Any dust, dirt, oil etc. should be removed.
APPLY PRESSURE
Take time to ensure that a good amount of pressure is applied to the full length of the tape, ensuring no gaps between tape and surface are evident.
TRY PRE-PAINTING
Where a sharp and precise line needs to be achieved and dark paint is being used. Try using light paint first. This technique fills any tiny spaces that remain under the tape and stops any bleeds.
REMOVAL
Where possible it is best to take the masking tape off of the surface when the paint is touch dry but not completely dry.
When removing the tape, the angle of removal is important. Between 45 and 90 degrees will help to illuminate any residue being left behind whilst at a steady pace. Also keep in mind the temperature of the substrate during the removal process. This should be at least 5°c to avoid the adhesive going brittle and leaving residue on the surface.
Avoid leaving the tape on the substrate for extended periods as this may cause problems such as – paint peeling off, leaving residue etc. If you need an item to be masked for a longer period of time let us know, we have products (such as 3M 2899 and 244 which can stay on for up to 180 days)
STORAGE
Always (as with any adhesive or tape) give some thought to where the tape is being stored. The room temperature can dramatically affect the adhesion. If left in an environment that is too warm this can speed up the aging process.
