TECHNICAL TAPES & ADHESIVES - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What factors should I take into consideration before selecting an industrial tape or adhesive?

Before you select a technical tape, the following elements should always be considered –

  • What substrates will it be used to bond?
  • What is the environment it will be used in?
  • What is the application
  • Does it need to withstand any high temperatures?

What are the most difficult surfaces to bond?

Materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene, nylon and powder coated metals can be especially difficult.

However, why not chat to our friendly team before you place your order who are happy to advise and offer solutions where possible. Call – 0844 4438 389 now or enquire via email – enquiries@firststoppackaging.co.uk

How do i prepare my surfaces for bonding?

The substrates/ surfaces should be clean and dry. Free of grease and oil as well as any other contaminants. Use a lintless cloth to clean the surface using a suitable solvent.

What adhesive is best for outdoor use?

Acrylic adhesives provide a wider temperature range, usually meaning they are better suited for outdoor use. All pressure sensitive adhesives need to be applied at ambient temperature for best results.

POLYTHENE BAGS - HELP & ADVICE

What thickness do I need?

There is a quite a range of thickness`s available, to simplify things we suggest the following as a guide only, please check suitability as other factors i.e. product handling/shipping etc. can affect the grade of lay flat tubing or polythene bag material required.

  • For general applications (packing washers/rubber gaskets etc.): 250g material
  • For heavy duty uses (packing nuts /bolts/door furniture etc.) : 500g material
  • For extra heavy duty (heavyweight bolts, pointed objects, bar etc.) 1000g material

Finally, what size do I need?

As a rule polythene bags are measured width first (opening side) x length (depth of bag). Layflat tubing is measured by width (unopened, flat), hence the term "layflat tubing" x thickness.

To work out what size is required for example when shipping a tubular item, it is necessary to work out the circumference of the tube, dividing this figure by two will give the minimum size required as follows:

  1. Measure the diameter of tube (D)
  2. Multiply diameter (D) x 3.142 to obtain circumference (C)
  3. Divide Circumference (C) by 2 to obtain layflat width of bag or polytubing required
  4. Check what is the nearest size available, allow room for sliding item in tube so as not too tight a fit……………….
